Fabio Cannavaro captained the Italian national team to victory during the World Cup held in Germany, beating France on penalties in the final.

Note: The result listed above was the outcome of a vote held amongst a panel of football journalists, with each allowed to pick a top five from a list of nominees selected by France Football. The player in first place received five points, the one in second received four points, etcetera, etcetera. In order to be nominated, a player had to be playing for a club in one of the countries belonging to UEFA.

One voter was appointed from each of the following 52 countries: Albania, Andorra, Armenia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, England, Estonia, Faeroe Islands, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Israel, Italy, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Malta, Moldova, the Netherlands, Northern Ireland, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Ireland, Romania, Russia, San Marino, Scotland, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine and Wales.

The following footballers were nominated but didn't receive any votes: Michael Ballack, Tim Cahill, Joe Cole, Grégory Coupet, Cris, Mahamadou Diarra, Michael Essien, Francesc Fabregas, William Gallas, Steven Gerrard, Ludovic Giuly, Fabio Grosso, Claude Makélélé, Florent Malouda, Edison Méndez, Juan Riquelme, Arjen Robben, Wayne Rooney, Willy Sagnol, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Andrey Shevchenko, Lilian Thuram, Tiago, en Fernando Torres.
